July 2 STUDENTS GRADES 2-9
"The Edmund Fitzgerald & Great Lakes Shipping" FREE

Explore the events that led to the loss of the 729 foot freighter during a November storm in 1975. Following the presentation, K to 6 students will join in activities about the Great Lakes shipping and receiving ports and the cargos the ships carry. Learn how the loss of the Fitzgerald has resulted in improved safety and communication.

July 12 ADULTS ONLY - Historical Tour of Clifton and the Cliff Mine Meet at the Phoenix Church from 9:30 a.m. to Noon to examine photographs and maps that illustrate the history of the Cliff Mine and the town of Clifton. From 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. the tour will walk the town and the mine site. Bring a lunch and wear appropriate footwear. Conducted by Phil Mason and Larry Molloy, Historians.

July 16 STUDENTS GRADES K-6 - "Butterflies to Beetles" Students will take a close look at insects and their homes. They will catch and release their six-legged finds just as children may have done in the early mining days at Central. Meet at Central Mine Visitor's Center parking lot, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Conducted by Bonnie Hay.

July 20 "Life on the Frontier 1870" Travel back in time to the summer of 1870. Learn from costumed role players about daily life at Fort Wilkins. Students will participate in "Wash Day", "Homework" and "Life at the Fort" and will learn to play 19th Century games. Meet in Copper Harbor at the Lighthouse Overlook across from the Fort Wilkins Park entrance, 9:45 a.m. to Noon. Conducted by Barry James.

August 3 "All Work and No Play?" Learn what children did for fun in the 1800's. No computer, no TV! The students will play indoor and outdoor games: card and board games, running, jumping. They will find out what daily life was like on the 1870 frontier at Fort Wilkins and participate in living history. Meet in Copper harbor at the Lighthouse Overlook across from the Fort Wilkins entrance, 9:45 a.m. to Noon. Conducted by Barry James.

August 6 STUDENTS GRADES 2-9 -- "Great Lakes Water in Motion" FREE Follow water movement as it moves downhill from Lake Superior to the Atlantic Ocean. Demonstrations will include warm water rising and cooler water sinking, seasonal temperature layers and mixing, changing water levels, and how locks work. Monday evening 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Eagle Harbor Community Building. Joan Schumaker-Chadde, presenter.

August 15 "Lights and Lighthouses" Take a "behind the scenes" tour of the Copper harbor Main and Range Lighthouses. Learn their story in relation to lake shipping, why the lights were built, how they changed, who worked there and life as a light keeper. Learn about restoration work and how the exhibits were put together. Meet in Copper Harbor at the Lighthouse Overlook across from the Fort Wilkins Park entrance, 5:45 - 8:00 p.m. Conducted by Barry James.

The Society owns and maintains the Lighthouse Complex, the Rathbone School and the Coast Guard Boathouse in Eagle Harbor; the Church-Museum and Bammert Blacksmith Shop in Phoenix; and 58 acres at Central with a Visitor's Center, historic buildings and walking trails.
