July 9 STUDENTS GRADES K-5
"Attending Rathbone School"
Going to school barefoot? If you were attending the Rathbone School in 1864, you may have done so. You would have learned your lessons with slate and chalk, written with a metal-nib pen and ink and "made your manners" at all times. You can do all of these things plus play games, sing songs of the past and do an art project while taking on the identity of an actual Eagle Harbor "scholar" of the 1860's. Come barefoot or wear a long skirt and experience an exciting morning of "living history". Thursday 9:30 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. Meet at the Rathbone School on Center Street in Eagle Harbor. Conducted by Joanne Bollinger.
July 16 ADULTS ONLY
"A Historical Tour of Delaware and the Delaware Mine"
Spend the day learning about life in the town of Delaware. Meet at the Eagle Harbor Community Building at 10:00 a.m. for a presentation of photographs, maps and other material that provide a glimpse of life at one of the earliest mines in the Keweenaw. After lunch, drive to the Delaware Mine and take a walk to see exhibits and ruins of the mine and surrounding town. An underground tour of the mine will also be available. Bring a lunch or sign up for a hot pasty. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Thursday 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Meet at the Eagle Harbor Community Building on M-26 in Eagle Harbor. Conducted by Phil Mason, Larry Molloy, Tom Poynter & Clarence Monette, historians and authors.
July 22 STUDENTS GRADES K-8
"Set Sail for the St. Lawrence Seaway"
In a classic story, Paddle to the Sea, a young Canadian boy carves a tiny boat that is launched from the headwaters of the Great Lakes and floats all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of this important waterway. Make your own boat to launch and explore the challenges your boat will meet along its journey to the sea. Wednesday 9:30 a.m. - 11;30 a.m. Meet at the Eagle Harbor Community Center on M-26 in Eagle Harbor. Joan Chadde, presenter.
July 24 STUDENTS GRADES 2-12
"Living History : Civil War Encampment"
Students will get a "behind the scenes" look at Battery D and their Civil War Era artillery encampment. Participants will learn about food, equipment, uniforms and the steps of loading and firing a 12 pounder Napoleon cannon. Bring a lunch.. Friday 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Meet at the Lighthouse Overlook across from the entrance to Fort Wilkins State Park in Copper Harbor. Barry James, presenter.
July 25 ADULTS ONLY
"Brockway Mountain Drive and Lakeshore Drive"
Help celebrate the 75th anniversary of these historic roadways. Participate in a bus tour of the Lakeshore and Brockway Mountain Drives. Learn how they were built, the unique characteristics of their construction and how they have changed over time. The tour will return to the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge in time for dinner (optional). Wear appropriate shoes for walking short distances to points of interest. Saturday 1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Meet in the parking lot of the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge in Copper Harbor. Did you know that the Cliff Mine had a mining complex on top of the Cliff? Join us as we explore this little known site that has remained untouched for over a century. Find out how the work on top related to the work at the more familiar site below. Meet at the Eagle River School House for a presentation on the upper Cliff Mine and then visit the site to see the remains. Bring a lunch or sign up for a hot pasty lunch. Wear sturdy walking shoes. Friday 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Meet at the Eagle River School Community Building on M-26 in Eagle River next to the Court House. Transportation will be provided.
