Take a “behind the scenes” tour of the Eagle Harbor Life-Saving Station. View the surfboats and hear the tales of the bravery of the life saving crews in the stormy waters of Lake Superior rescuing the sailors from the shipwreck of the Waldo. Learn to tie the knots that were essential to the rescues. Bring a lunch or sign up for Ned’s famous Fish Boil.

Find and Identify Copper Country Rocks and Minerals

And other volunteers from Copper Country Rock and Mineral Club
Join with beginners of all ages in the morning to learn more about the mineral treasures of the Keweenaw. After lunch, practice finding copper, mining artifacts and maybe even silver with a metal detector at the Central Mine lower rock pile. Bring your own detector or use one of ours. Bring a lunch or sign up for a hot pasty lunch. Wear sturdy walking shoes.

A Historical Tour of Central and the Central Mine

Spend the day learning about life in the town of Central Mine. Meet in the morning for a presentation of photographs, maps and other material that give a picture of life in this once bustling mining community. After lunch, take a walk along some of the paths that provide a glimpse of this historic town and the Central Mine. Bring a lunch or sign up for a hot pasty and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Come and enjoy an evening of old movies of the Keweenaw including building the cabins at the Mountain Lodge, the shipwreck Bangor and 1920s copper exploration at the Cliff.

Have you ever explored the old cemeteries where people from Eagle River and the Cliff Mine, the first successful mine in the Keweenaw are buried? Join
us at the old Eagle River School House to hear more about these hardy pioneers and learn how to rub and care for their tombstones. Then travel to the Eagle River Cemetery and/or the Catholic Cliff cemetery to practice the art of tombstone rubbing. Bring a lunch or sign up for a hot pasty lunch. Wear sturdy walking shoes.

Come and make cider from the heritage apples at Central. Bring baskets to pick the apples and containers for the cider. Help preserve the Keweenaw's Heritage. Join the Keweenaw County Historical Society founded in 1981. The Society owns and maintains the Lighthouse Complex, the Rathbone School and the Life Saving Station in Eagle Harbor; the Eagle River Museum; the Bammert Blacksmith Shop and the Church of the Assumption in Phoenix; the school house at Gay and 58 acres at Central with a Visitor Center, historic buildings and walking trails. In 2010 the Society is opening a new historic museum in Eagle River and a Life-Saving museum in Eagle Harbor. Membership benefits include free admission to all sites, reduced rates for Outreach Programs, and free issues of our award winning quarterly publication, The Superior Signal.
